Are you a baldie?

Suffering from hair loss or thinning hair? Finding tufts of scalp hair in your shower drain every morning? Are you seriously considering purchasing a wig or hair transplants?

In other words: Are you a baldie (or on the way to becoming one)?

Don’t worry, even if your crown is analogous to a billiard ball, there’s light at the end of the tunnel (though it may be dim). Researchers from the University of Bonn recently have unmasked 14 genomic regions correlated to high potential for the growth and loss of scalp hair. The most promising candidate could be a cluster of 34 genes located on human chromosome 3. Well, the scientists didn’t call this promising region “bald patch” – but it may very well be one, and possibly the end of aggressive hair loss.

What’s in store for hair loss sufferers? Perhaps German researchers may narrow “bald patch” down to a single gene. Such a discovery may lead to blockbuster pharmaceuticals with the success of this gem…

Realistically, hair loss cannot be linked to a single gene. It’s a complex process involving a number of factors. But not to worry: there is a surplus of bald-headed chaps with more appeal than their very hairy counterparts!
